Description
Community Event
National Night Out
Sponsored by the Niles Police Department
The Niles Police Department, in conjunction with the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), will be holding the National Night Out Against Crime and Drugs. The National Night Out is a community-building event to develop and improve relationships with neighbors, community members and local businesses to prevent and stop crime. This event is held internationally on the first Tuesday in August; communities will be imultaneously holding their events.
From 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. , members of the Niles Police Department and the community will conduct a "flashlight walk" (1 mile) through the neighborhood. This is a symbolic event in which residents are urged to "turn on their lights" and post notice to the criminals that they are not wanted in Niles. Each year the Niles National Night Out committee tries to come up with a special theme to the event. In past years we have held "Teen Dance Parties," "Spot the Criminal," and "Don’t Drive Drunk."
This year they are going to have a live band, "Undercover." Rock and roll with Undercover! The band plays a fun-loving mix of classic rock and oldies. You are guaranteed to be grooving to recognizable songs from the 50s to the 90s. There’s something for everyone: unforgettable dance tunes to favorite sing-alongs. Following with our theme of youth safety, we are holding a "Bicycle Rodeo." Bring your child’s bicycle, have your child evaluated by our bicycle officers and then observe your child traveling through our bicycle course. Bring your bicycle to get your bicycle registered in Niles. Family Challenge Events: Go through our three events as a family, against other families, to win a prize. Donut Eating Contest: Test your skills, against another resident, to see if you can "eat like a cop." Other events: DUI simulation driving with "Fatal Vision" goggles; face painting; moon walk; and balloon artist. Come join the fun and build community spirit at this great event.
If you would like to volunteer for this event please contact Sgt. Ronald Brandt or Sgt. Robert Tornabene at 847-588-6500.
